LONDON – Six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has become the wealthiest British sportsman with 224 million pounds, revealed by the 2020 Sunday Times Rich List.

It is believed that the 35-year-old driver has increased his wealth by 37 million pounds in the past year and a possible contract extension with Mercedes could mean a lucrative boost for the future.

Golf player Rory McIlroy was the only other sportsman in the 1,000 List with a fortune worth 170 million pounds, but sports elites dominated the Young Rich List (aged 30 or under), claiming 18 of the 50 places.

Football star Gareth Bale from Real Madrid was the richest young sports star in Britain with 114 million pounds while boxer Anthony Joshua, worth 107 million was the only other athlete with wealth above 100 million pounds in the Young Rich List.
