Graeme Souness “felt sorry” for Liverpool after they lifted the Premier League trophy in front of an empty Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side finally lifted the trophy after a 30-year wait, with their return to the pinnacle of English football sealed almost a month ago.

Souness sympathised with the players, who celebrated on top of the Kop, as the presentation was deprived of the “love and passion” Liverpool’s supporters always provide.

“I think they’ve done very well, it was always going be difficult but that’s as good as you can hope for,” said Souness.

“You get the trophy, you go to the supporters, you get the love and passion from them so I feel for them. They’ll still have a great night but I feel for them.

“This is a new experience for all the players, they really have to savour the moment.”

Souness added that he believes Jurgen Klopp’s side will keep improving and become a dominant force for years to come.

“They have the spark,” he said. “If you’re a player you want to be playing every week. You look around the dressing room and there are so many top players and that should motivate you.

“There’s a good mix of experience and quality. They’re going to be the team to beat now.”
